Micky van de Ven scored on two occasions as Spurs prolonged their winning streak in away games in the top division and handed the Toffees their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having departed Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the conclusion of last season.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven struck on two occasions from corners in the first half to place their strong form at risk, and they were unable to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - headed home a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender thought he had equalized the scores a short while after the defender's opener, glancing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

Beto, in the meantime, failed to convert a number of chances, while Vicario made a succession of fine saves to ensure the London club went five away games unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, advising the match official to check the score on the screen and the official ruled that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's team into third place in the Premier League, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and sit six points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven fulfils duties at each end of the field

Following a drab midweek performance in the Champions League against Monaco, where they mustered a only attempts on target, the manager opted for Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was unable to influence the game before being substituted for the substitute after an hour on the pitch, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Centre-back Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be feared.

Spurs' opening strike came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with the midfielder directing the ball back across the face of goal for an unmarked Van de Ven to score.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as captain in Cristian Romero's absence - added his second in added time as he rose above the England keeper to head home.

Van de Ven was equally impressive in defence, combining effectively with Kevin Danso as the pair handled superbly with the 34 crosses thrown their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking finishing touch

Everton's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it seems the novelty may have faded somewhat and supporters headed to the gates after the midfielder's third for Tottenham.

The end in Everton's winning streak at home won't be a massive concern for the manager, but their attacking woes are.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' pair of established centre-forwards - had scored just a single goal between them before the weekend's outing.

And they were unable to contribute to that miserable tally on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.

Beto's form was epitomized when he opted to overhead kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, even with having space and time to readjust for a simpler shot that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, too, failed to make an impact after coming on for Beto in the second half.

It was not for a lack of opportunity. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and Ndiaye, who relentlessly delivered threatening crosses into the Tottenham penalty area.

Everton: Moyes' men travel to the Stadium of Light in the top flight on early November at 8 PM.

Tottenham: The London club go to Newcastle's ground on Wednesday, 29 October for their next round League Cup tie against Newcastle.
